Top 5 NBA Point Guards

This list marks the beginning of my "Top 5" series. I will update this list regularly. Please let me know if I forgot anything in the comments below.

Omissions- Russell Westbrook due to injury

5. Kyrie Irving

Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers is famous for his "Uncle Drew" impersonation commercials, and for his globe-trotter worthy ball-handling ability.  Kyrie Irving has, perhaps, the best isolation game of any of the point guards on this list (Westbrook would probably earn that honor if he were healthy). In only his third year, Irving is averaging 22.5 points and 6 assists per game. However his team has not experienced much success in the pathetically weak and top-heavy eastern conference, so he falls to number 5 on this list.

4. Damian Lillard

The second year man out of Webber State has led his team to a 24-7 start, unheard of in recent Trailblazers history, especially seeing that they did not make the playoffs last year. Lillard utilizes the high pick-and-pop mostly with LaMarcus Aldridge. This dynamic duo pairs for an almost unstoppable pick-and-pop game that has boosted Aldridge's numbers to MVP type levels. Lillard averages 21.1 points and shoots the highest 3-point percentage of any point guard on this list, 43.1%. I look for Damian to make his first All-Star game appearance this year.

3. John Wall

John Wall, in his fourth year out of Kentucky, is putting up career high numbers in steals, assists, points, and 3-point percentage. While Wall has not experienced the team success of Lillard and the Trailblazers, Wall has led the Wizards to a 14-14 start, which is better than any of his previous years. What really sets Wall apart from Lillard is his 9 assists per game, which is over 3 assists per game higher than Lillard. Also Wall, with his length and supreme athleticism, is probably the best defender on this list. However, Wall is definitely a step behind the top two players on this list in terms of skill and team success.

2. Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry has received the utmost praise for his tremendous shooting ability. Curry has one of the quickest releases in the NBA, and combined with his superior pick-and-roll ability, he averages over 23 points a game (the highest of any PG on this list). Curry also displays superior passing skills with over 9.5 assists per game. Curry loves to shoot off the dribble, off screens, on the fast break, and pretty much any time he can get a shot off without being blocked. Curry's shooting success has translated directly to a strong start for the Warriors this season who are 20-13 (7th in the strong western conference).

1. Chris Paul

No surprises here. CP3 is the face of NBA point guards, and his Clippers are fourth in the West with their 21-12 record. Paul is the floor general, leading the league in assists (11.4 per game), and initiating much of the offense through high pick-and-rolls. Paul also leads the this list in steals with just over 2.5 per game. Paul scores with relative ease, however he struggles sometimes in isolation situations due to his height disadvantage. However, despite his height disadvantage, Paul leads this list in rebound as well (4.7 per game). Paul's contribution to his team is tremendous, and without him the clippers might be back where they were in Blake Griffin's rookie season: out of the playoffs.
